Ordem dos Psicólogos

“International Presidents’ Initiative at the 2012 Annual Convention”

Ordem dos Psicólogos (OPP) present at the APA Annual Convention

18.September.2012

The Order was invited by the President of APA, Suzanne Bennett Johnson, to be present at this initiative which brought together 27 managers from 19 Psychology associations from around the world. This convention allowed for the sharing of experiences and the discussion of various aspects related to the profession in each of the participating countries.

The convention of managers was promoted by APA, and took place in Orlando from the 2nd to the 5th of August 2012.

At this meeting, managers from 19 countries were present (Australia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bermuda, China, Colombia, Iran, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the UK).

The delegation of the order, made up of the President (Telmo Mourinho Baptista) and the Vice-President (Samuel Antunes), participated in two general meetings where various topics which were relevant to the countries present were discussed, namely aspects related to the exercising of the Psychology profession; the role of Psychology in healthcare; alterations in professional regulation.

This convention was very relevant for developing contacts with various departments of the APA, thereby allowing greater knowledge on specific and organisation issues. The organisational model for this convention allowed the existence of 14 moments of contact between the various countries present.

From the results of the meeting, we can highlight the concordance for the development of an agreement between OPP and APA which includes aspects related to training, the exchanging of information and the sharing of experiences, to be signed at the next Convention. Note the importance of this agreement due to the fact that other countries, with older representative organisations, only formalised it this year. This convention was a time for learning and contact with one of the oldest and largest psychology organisations in the world and of Worldwide reference to all Psychologists.
