Students at risk of loosing school guidance

School and professional guidance in schools at risk

25.July.2012

The position of the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses (OPP) is that the Ministry of Education and Science cannot give tasks which require a specific qualification, in this case, a specific qualification in psychology, to unqualified professionals.

On the 17th of July 2012, the Ministry of Education and Science issued guidelines for the distribution of teaching staff, with the objective of promoting success and reducing school drop outs.

It attributed to teachers the possibility of carrying out a set of activities, including "School guidance activities for 8th and 9th grade students, so as to better identify their academic path”

These are tasks which need technical know-how, the capacity to evaluate and intervention skills, which fall exclusively on school psychologists. In fact, this work is already done by school psychologists in the scope of the various duties they perform in schools.

The position of the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses (OPP) is that the Ministry of Education and Science cannot give tasks which require a specific qualification, in this case a specific qualification in psychology, to unqualified professionals.

It is the duty of the Ordem dos Psicólogos (OPP) to inform the Ministry of Education and Science of this matter, and also inform parents and guardians of this, so as to comply with the total commitment to the quality of an activity which must only be performed by qualified professions. The Order also stated that it does not make sense to reduce the number of psychologists in schools so as to pass on the work of psychologists to other professionals.
