The Order warns against the risk of dispensing with professionals during a crisis

16.February.2012

In an interview with RTP, the President, Telmo Mourinho Baptista, made it very clear that schools and health centre needed to be reinforced with psychologists so as not to pay the high price in social and economic terms.

The Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses (OPP) believes that it is incomprehensible that, at a time when the crisis is worsening in Portugal, essential resources, such as psychologists, are being wasted. The cases of depression, stress, suicide and excessive consumption are increasing due to the instability in the country, but, conversely, the number of psychologists, especially in schools and health centres, has been falling.

Last October, at the time of the publication of the report on the cost-effectiveness of psychological interventions in healthcare, the Order made it clear that it was urgent to reinforce psychologists in schools and in health, due to the increase in situations of stress, depression and suicide.

In an interview with RTP, Telmo Mourinho Baptista reinforced the role that psychologists can play to help overcome the instability being felt in the country, because no one is better prepared to deal with situations of crisis and they are specialists in human behaviour.
