Order highlights the importance of psycholoigsts in the mental health of the community

The first meeting of a cycle of seven conferences, organised by Associação Recriar Caminhos and the Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Coimbra, was aimed at bringing attention to the new paradigm in mental health in Portugal.

This Monday, in Coimbra, the first meeting of a cycle of conferences on mental health related to the topic «Psycho-social Rehabilitation and Mental Healthcare in the Community». This cycle of seven conferences, organised by Associação Recriar Caminhos and the Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Coimbra, was aimed at bringing attention to the new paradigm in mental health in Portugal.

The first meeting, which took place on World Day for Mental Health, took place in the Dean's Auditorium of the Universidade de Coimbra in which Samuel Antunes, vice-president of the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses (OPP) participated.

The Order intends to develop guidelines for the intervention of psychologists in continued care integrated in mental health, establishing partnerships with the universities in the creation of specialised training in the area of community psychology and, it also announced, the creation of a work group centred of the development of the activity of psychologists in this area.

Samuel Antunes highlighted the contribution of these professionals in psychological interventions in mental healthcare in the community. The organisation of this event was led by Prof. Dr Viegas de Abreu, honorary member of the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses (OPP).
