The Ordem dos Psicólogos (OPP) was received at a hearing by the Minister for Health, on the 13th of September. At the hearing, the Order expressed its concern about the reduction of resources available in psychological terms for the population, particularly during this crisis, where an increase in psychological disturbances is expected. It was noted that these resources were already scarce and that their withdrawal would worsen the health of the Portuguese, with various impacts which could also burden the State more, instead of contributing to a relief of current economic problems.
The Order presented a group of ideas for the application of psychological intervention in the area of health, already being followed in some countries, and strongly backed by international studies performed, which show the efficiency of psychological intervention both in the area of mental health but also in healthcare in general. The evaluation of these interventions has consistently shown that it saves the State, and its users, money, with positive results in health, well-being and adjustment which lasts.
The Health Minister recognised the need to create answers to psychological disturbances and believes that solutions should be sought in the scope of the National Health Plan. The Order has said it is available to facilitate the support needed for the development of solutions which allow for a wider coverage of the needs of the population.
