Ordem dos Psicólogos

Politicians, Educators and Society - Telmo Mourinho Baptista

29.August.2011

In an interview to Revista Exame, Telmo Baptista answered “Seven Questions …” expressing his opinion regarding the current political-social-economic state and the role that politicians, educators and society can have in a national movement for mobilisation.

The President of the Ordem dos Psicólogos (OPP) believes that suffering is supported differently, for better, when a sense is given to it. If not, if there is no explanation for the strain, people can enter into states of despair and frustration, which can be fatal. The sacrifices which they ask of the Portuguese will be better tolerated as long as there is a concern, by the Portuguese political bodies, in giving an explanation for the sacrifices being asked.

At a time when the consumption of medication increases simultaneously with the increase in the price of medication, the President believes that the State will suffer great costs for not publicising and promoting alternative therapies to the prescription of medication. There are mechanisms which help create resistances to difficulties, namely psychotherapy. Social costs due to the non-prevention of the State regarding mental healthcare can be high and difficult to recover.
