Ordem dos Psicólogos

Population without Psychological support in emergency situations

17.June.2010

The Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses is gravely concerned about the Ministry of Health's decision to withdraw INEM's psychologists from intervening on the scene in crisis situations such as traffic accidents, natural disasters, suicide attempts, domestic violence, etc., and appointing them administrative tasks.
The OPP considers it an odd measure taken by the Government. If it is the Government's goal to cut back on INEM funding, it should wait for this measure to, in the short, medium and long term, increase Government spending due to a higher number of psychiatric emergencies and human resources needed in hospitals and an increase in psychological support in health clinics which shall all result in higher financial spending. All this can be avoided with the permanent and immediate intervention of INEM psychologists on the scene in crisis situations.
The Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses has expressed its commitment to jointly find a solution with the Ministry of Health, to resolve this issue.
