«Psychological Intervention can reduce costs in the Health sector»

In an interview with the Weekly publication “Vida Económica”, the President of the Ordem dos Psicólogos (OPP) made it very clear there is insufficient coverage of psychologists in Health and "a certain unawareness" of the benefits.

The weekly publication of Vida Económica reports that psychological intervention can have a very important role in the reduction of costs to the National Health System. In an interview, the President of the Ordem dos Psicólogos (OPP), Telmo Mourinho Baptista, shows how the intervention of a psychologist can effectively reduce costs in Health.

He explains that, among other aspects, a brief psychological intervention can allow a worker to get back to their professional activity more quickly, which reduces the time away sick, the consumption of medication and, at the same time, promotes well-being.

The President also stated that there is insufficient coverage of psychological help in Health, especially in Health Centres, which are first in line to have contact with the population.

In companies, Telmo Mourinho Baptista mentions the advantages of psychologists in contracting suitable people for the roles, and also in the development of competences for a better efficiency and motivation at work. In schools, according to the President, the psychologist can help in the professional selection of students and to intervene in situations related to learning difficulties, or even in the application of programmes for the development of personal competences, among others.
